Ping Pong Diplomacy

Ping Pong Diplomacy refers to the exchange of table tennis players between the United States and People's Republic of China that started in 1971. The US players traveled to China to play in 1971. The Chinese team came to the USA to play in 1972. The event marked a thaw in Sino-American relations that paved the way for a visit to Beijing by President Nixon. One of the Ping Pong Diplomacy matches was held in Detroit at Cobo Arena in front of ten thousand spectators.

Pong Detroit will continue the mission of Ping Pong Diplomacy.
